Television shows like "Cake Boss" have elevated cake making to a new level. Because of them, said Malakah Williams, when it comes to designing cakes for special occasions, "some people come up with crazy ideas."Williams knows this first-hand as the owner of a new Danbury business, Bash! Located at 80 North St., Bash! is an event boutique and organic cakery. With all the exotic ideas people have, wedding cakes can be especially challenging, she said. But between confidence that her cakes "taste good" (from years of being told they do), and her use of organic ingredients, the creative joy she experiences makes all the challenges worthwhile."Cutting into some (other cakes) is like cutting into cardboard. I try to work from the inside out and I like to keep my design aesthetic, really clean," she said. "The design part is easy" and starts with finding out what flavors a client likes. "I ask them, `What is your favorite flower?' `How is your dress designed?' `Where is your party?' and say, `Let's design something you have not seen.' And it works."
Williams' business is a party venue with a showroom of table settings and cakes on display. One example is the African-inspired table setting with a leopard print tablecloth and raffia place mats, leather and wooden statues of giraffes and zebras, and lighted tree branches. Cakes are baked off premises. In this case, the cake would be decorated with animals drawn in frosting, and related decorations.Planning special occasions is enjoyable work, Williams said."These are the happiest times for people so I'm excited with them to plan, be it a baby shower or birthday. A lot of my clients have been coming to me for years."
Client Nneka Maiurro, of Bethel, had her son's First Holy Communion party at Bash!"It was wonderful. From the beginning, my son came in and he was the client, and Malekah was amenable to whatever he wanted, from the colors to any special food he liked."Williams said her business partners are her family. They are her husband, Basheer Shabazz, who inspired the name Bash, son E'Jaaz Shabazz-Williams, for whom she planned her first party, and daughters Kiana and Ziya -- they "keep my creative juices flowing. They are all my inspiration, my creativity, my truth."
